Introducing

Diary of a Dogcatcher

a memoir by Sandra Kay

I’m Sandra,

Welcome to the story.

I didn’t know the word, but I caught my first dog when I was six years old. Before I could even whistle “here boy,” I fell in love with every animal I saw, wild or gentle, large or small, in real life or on television. I couldn’t even tie my own shoes yet, but I knew that someone needed to help animals in trouble. On the day my shoes were finally tied, and for the rest of my life, I’ve known that someone was me.

What Early Reviews are Saying

“If you’ve ever lived the life of someone working in animal welfare, you’ll recognize the joys and sorrows in the pages of Sandy’s book. And if you haven’t lived this life but wonder about it, Sandy’s depiction is perfect. There are struggles which she talks about, but there’s also pride and a sense of satisfaction and that feeling of doing what you’ve meant to do.”

Dr. Jennifer Williams, Executive Director, Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society

“Diary of a Dogcatcher weaves the beautiful and sometimes brutal emotions and experiences of working in animal welfare with the tragedy and triumph of simply being human. Anyone who’s worked in the animal world will recognize Peaches, Seymour, and Astro. This book makes us confront uncomfortable truths about animal welfare and memories of animals we think we failed, but also reminds us that we are not alone…and that our connection to other people, the animals we share the world with, and the world itself are what pulls us through the hard times.”

Stacy Smith, Executive Director, Humane Tomorrow.

“My childhood memories become entwined with the authors as the words jump off the page, and I travel back in time to my younger years.  Any animal lover will be enthralled as the author relives her love for all living and breathing things and outlines the many trials and tribulations of an animal control officer and her life beyond.  I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I jeered always yearning for the next story to begin and hoping it never ends.”
